Folly Beach Surf Break Map

So, you're looking for a place to surf? Here's a brief breakdown on some of the places to surf. The streets are numbered, so they're easy to find. Parking in the summer can be crowded, don't park with your tire on the road or you'll get a ticket. This isn't a complete list and is no substitute for your own research.

Surfing is forbidden from 6th East to 6th West, from 10am to 6pm from May to September 15th. Leashes are required by law and always, stay 300ft from the pier!

1. The Pier - Just go straight at the light and you'll see the Holiday Inn. There's parking at the pier parking lot, but it will cost you. There are showers, drink machines and rest rooms. The break is soft and gentle, but the crowd is fairly aggressive. The pier is 'the' longboard break at Folly and usually too weak for shortboards. Form May to September, surfing is forbidden between 10am and 6pm. The pier works best on a E to NE swell.

2. 6th and 7th - A fun break with both a nice outside and punchy inside break. The crowds are usually low and the lineup is friendly. It's a fun place to surf. The groins create some odd currents on bigger swells, so be careful. Best on a large E to NE swell, but works on all directions

3. 9th and 10th - There's a fairly wide beach area for sunbathing and beach games and the break ain't half bad. There's more power here than the pier and it breaks on everything from a SW to NE. The waves here have some nice power on a good swell. This break is hard to beat for size and crowds. The crowd is mellow and there are usually breaks a few blocks to the north and south.

4. The Washout - When you stop seeing houses on the right, that's the washout. The washout is usually bigger than any other break at Folly, it breaks on any swell, has parking right in front and it's almost always crowded - very crowded. It's a top to bottom break with plenty of power when there's some size. The crowds here are thick and competitive. If you haven't been surfing long or don't feel like battling for waves, avoid the washout. There are lots of other breaks around that you can score more waves without the hassle. Works best on E to S swell.

5. Handicap Access - About a half mile past the washout, you'll see a public access with ample handicap access. The wave here is usually a little smaller than the washout, but has the same punch. It's almost never crowded. More often than not, you'll be surfing alone here. When the tide really pushes in and the rest of the beach is mushy, there's usually a nice little break off the groin here. A fun little wave and a welcome relief from the washout's summer crowd. Breaks best on NE to E swell.

6. Lighthouse Inlet - The least crowded break at Folly and the least surfed. Not a paddle for the faint of heart. The inlet does break, but it's usually very weak and you'll have to paddle across the inlet and out to the sandbar, which can be over a half mile away. The water is very murky and full of toothy critters. And after that long walk and paddle, you're likely to get skunked. It's a fickle spot that catches more chop than swell.

7. 2nd West - Just south of the pier, it breaks a lot like the pier, but without the crowds. The inside is a little punchier than the pier and it's a fun little break. This is a good place to learn to surf or improve before moving on to other breaks. Works best on big S swells.

8. 4th West - Like 6th and 7th, this break had lots of potential on many different swells, but is seldom ridden. The crowd here is usually nothing to just a few people out. There's a funky little sandbar than can either make or break the wave here. A mellow takeoff and a racy inside make for some fun rides and a few barrels on good a good swell. Watch out for the groins! Works best on a big E swell.

9. 8th West - Almost never a crowd here and a nice little break that you can usually surf alone or with just a few people. Works well on most swells and has enough punch to be fun, but it's usually a little smaller than the pier and the washout. Parking can be a hassle, but there is a public shower at the walk over. Work best on NE to SE swell.

10. County Park - Can be a lot of fun, but the swimmers always have the right-of-way. Lifeguards will run you off during the summer to keep the swimming are clear. It's a fun little longboard break and can get really good on a big swell. Lots of parking, showers, changing rooms and vending machines make this a very accessible break, it's just a shame that it's usually at least a foot smaller than most other break. Works best when everywhere else is big and closing out.
